GETTING THE TENSION RIGHT This is sometimes thought to be a tedious part of knitting, and something you might be tempted to skip, but it is THE MOST IMPORTANT thing to get right if you want to achieve the correct finished size. Everyone knits slightly differently, and the tension on the pattern is simply a standard tension for the weight of yarn quoted. Three different knitters can cast on the same number of stitches using the same yarn and needle size and yet finish up with squares that are very different in size (see above.) Your own knitting may be a little tighter, or a little looser than the original designer’s. Don’t forget that even a small difference will have an impact on the garment size ?2 extra stitches over 10cm could result in a 50cm wide garment ending up 54cm wide, front and back. 正しいゲージをとる これは時には編み物のうんざりする部分として考えられがちですし、できれば省略したいと思うでしょう。でもコレが完璧なゲージは単にその毛糸の標準的なゲージなのです。3人のニッターが同じ糸と針を使って、同じ下図のつくり目をして編んだとします。でも、ほら御覧のように出来上がりは全く違ってくるのです。  あなたはオリジナルのデザイナーと比べて、少しかっちりと編むタイプかも知れません。それともゆったり編む人かも知れません。その小さな違いでも出来上がりのサイズには大きな違いを生むことを忘れないで下さい。後ろ身ごろ、前身ごろとも10cm2目増やすと50cmの身幅になる筈が、54cmにもなってしまうのです。
TO FIND THE CORRECT TENSION ･First using the needles stated in the ‘tension’ section of your pattern, cast on the number of stitches given, plus 10 extra. Work in the stitch pattern stated until the square measures 14cm long. Cast off evenly. Do not press the knitted swatch, simply lay it flat, right side up, on a non slippery surface ･To count the number of stitches, place a pin vertically approx 1cm in from one side edge and measure 10cm across. Place another pin at the 10cm point ･Now count the stitches between the 2 pins ? count each V as one stitch ･To count the number of rows, place a pin horizontally approx 1cm from the top edge and measure 10cm down. Place another pin at the 10cm point. 
･Now count the number of rows between the 2 pins ? each V counts as 1 row.
正しいゲージの取り方 ・まず、編み方のゲージの欄に書いてある針を使って、いわれた数に10目プラスして作り目をします。14cmの長さになるまで作りめした目数で編みます。その後伏せ目をして、編んだサンプルはアイロンがけせずに滑らないものの上で表をうえにして置きます。 ・編み目を数えるため、端から約1cmの所に垂直に待ち針を打ちます。そこから横に10cm測り、もう1本待ち鉢を打ちます。 ・2本の針の間の編み目を数えて下さい。その際、‘V’の形を1目と数えます。 ・段数を数えるために、上から約1cmの所に水平に待ち針を打ちます。そこから下に10cm測り、もう1本待ち針を打ちます。 ・2本の針の間の段数を数えて下さい。‘V’の形を1段と数えます。 ADJUSTING THE TENSION So what happens if you find you have too few or too many stitches? This is where you need a little patience, as it may be necessary to knit another square. Just remember that time spent now will make all the difference between a garment you love to wear and one you push to the back of the cupboard. ゲージを合わせる さてここで目数が少なかったりしたら？ここが我慢のしどころです。もう一度編んで下さい。費やした時間は無駄にはなりません。お気に入りの一枚となるか、たんすの奥に仕舞い込んだままになってしまうかここが分かれ目なのです。 TOO FEW STITCHES This means your knitting is too loose, and a garment knitted at this tension would finish up too big. Try another tension square with needles 1 size smaller. 少ない目数 これはあなたの編み方がゆるいということです。このまま編んでしまうと出来上がりは大きすぎます。1サイズ小さい針でゲージを編み直して下さい。 TOO MANY STITCHES This means your knitting is too tight and, not only will the fabric be too boardy, but your finished garment will be too small and unwearable. Remember to persevere ? time invested now will ensure a perfect fit later. 多い目数 これはあなたの編み方がきついということです。出来上がりがごわごわと硬くなるだけでなく、小さすぎて、着られません。辛抱辛抱。これにかけた時間は後であなたのジャストサイズを保証してくれますからね。1サイズ大きな針で編み直しましょう。
