ALTERING THE LENGTH OF A GARMENT
There may be times when you need to alter the length of a knitted garment after it is finished. If you have misjudged a measurement in the early stages your finished knitting may turn out longer, or shorter, than you intended. Although it’s not possible to alter the width, it is sometimes possible to make adjustments in the length. This is sometimes more difficult when a garment is heavily patterned with intarsia or stitchwork.

編みあがった後、長さを変えるなんてことも時にはありますね。もし最初に測り違えていたら、思ったより出来上がりは長かったり、短かったり。身幅を変えることはできなくても長さを変えることはできます。編み込みや刺繍を施してある場合はちょっと厄介ですが。

LENGTHENING A GARMENT
Add extra length just above the ribbing or border at the bottom of the back and front.
長くする
後ろ身ごろ、前身ごろのゴム編みや縁取り部分に付け足します。

Step1 Using smaller needles than those you used to knit the garment, pick up the stitches of the row just above the ribbing or border, and the loops of 3rd row above this. Snip yarn at side edge between the 2 needles and carefully unpick yarn across the row.
【ステップ1】 今まで編んでいたものよりも小さいサイズの針を使ってゴム編みや縁取りのちょうど上の段をすくいます。そしてまたその上3段目も同じようにすくって下さい。2本の針の間にある糸を端で切って、注意してほどきます。

Step2 Using the original size needles, and working any shaping required, work the extra length onto the needle holding the ribbing or border. Now graft the stitches together following the instructions for Grafting, below.
【ステップ2】 もともとのサイズの針を使って、ゴム編みあるいは縁取りに加えて必要なだけ編んでいきます。次のはぎ方の指示に従って、はいでいきます。

SHORTENING A GARMENT
Calculate how many centimeters you want to lose, and mark this point above the ribbing or border by threading a short piece of contrast yarn through the stitches at either end of the row, but don’t forget to include the depth of the ribbing or border in the finished measurement.
短くする
何センチ短くしたいかを決めてゴム編みあるいは縁取りから上のそのポイントに印を付けます。印は目印となる違う色の毛糸を両端に通します。この時出来上がりサイズにゴム編みあるいは縁取りの長さを入れることを忘れないで下さい。

Step1 Using smaller needles than those you have used to knit the garment, pick up the loops of the row above the ribbing, and those of the marked row.
【ステップ1】 今まで編んでいたものよりも小さいサイズの針を使ってゴム編みや縁取りのちょうど上の段をすくいます。そして糸印を付けた段も同じようにすくって下さい。

Step Cut the 1st stitch of the row below the marked row, and pull out the stitches using a blunt darning needle. Unravel the rows down to the needle holding the row above the ribbing or border, and graft the 2 rows together following the instructions for Grafting, below
【ステップ2】 印を付けたところの1段下の第1目を切り、先の丸いかがり針で縫い目を引き抜きます。ゴム編みあるいは縁取りのすぐ上の針を通した段までほどき、次のはぎ方の指示に従ってはいでいきます。

GRAFTING
This is a way of joining 2 rows of open stitches together using a needle threaded with matching yarn to make a row of ‘mock’ stitches
はぎ方
これは針が通っている2枚の編地と端と端の2段を同じ糸の通ったとじ針を使ってつなぎ合わせる方法です。はぎ目で1段作ることができます。
Step1 Lay the 2 open rows of stitches together edge to edge. Note that on the upper row of loops there will be 1 less than on the lower row. Working from the right side, pull the holding needles out of the first 3 or 4 stitches, and insert the threaded needle through the first stitch on the lower edge, from back to front, leaving a tail of yarn to be darned in later.
【ステップ1】 2枚の編み地の端と端をあわせ置きます。上の編み地の目は下の編み地のものより1目少なくなります。右側から始めます。まず、3,4目を針からはずし、糸を通したとじ針を下の編み地の最初の目に後ろから前へ通します。糸の端は後でかがりますから残しておいて下さい。

Step2 Insert the needle through the first stitch of the upper piece, also from the back of the work.
【ステップ2】 上の編み地の最初の目にもとじ針を後ろから通します。

Step3 Now insert the needle back into the first stitch of the lower piece, this time from front to back, and bring the needle through the next stitch on the same piece from back to front. Repeat this on the top piece, taking the needle back into the first stitch from front to back, and through the next stitch from back to front. Continue in this way, zigzagging from top to bottom, pulling the yarn gently to close the gap as you go, and ensuring that the new stitches are tensioned evenly so that the join becomes invisible.
【ステップ3】 次に下の編み地の最初の目にもう一度針を入れます。今度は前から後ろに通します。そして同じ編み地の次の目に後ろから前に通します。これを上の編み地でもくり返して下さい。最初の目には前から後ろへ戻る、次の目には後ろから前へ通す。このように続けて、上の編み地と下の編み地をジグザグに通っていきます。はいでいるときは、編まれた目と同じ大きさになるようにそっと糸を引きます。これでつなぎ目がわからなくなります。

TIPS
･It is a good idea to gently steam the stitches with a warm iron and damp cloth while they are still on the needles so when the needles are removed the stitches will hold their position while you graft them together
･Make sure the yarn is not pulled too tight or too loose when you are grafting stitches together, the idea is to make the row of grafting stitches match the tension of the rest of the knitted fabric
ちょっとアドバイス
・針のついているときに濡れた布でそっと編み目にスチームアイロンをかけると良いでしょう。そうすることで、はいでいるときに針を抜いても編み目がわからなくなるなんてことがありません。
・はいでいるときには、糸を引っ張り過ぎたり、反対に緩かったりということのないようにしましょう。他の編み目に合われるということを忘れずに！
